Paul David Johnson is an English singer, songwriter and producer, releasing indie songs as The Dawn Roar. He is joined on the road by Nick Tilling (bass) and Lee Jenkins (drums).
For Paul music is therapy.
“I often get up early in the morning and write, it’s a chance to get something done before the kids get up”. So, The Dawn Roar has in part something to do with his writing tendencies, but also the form his music takes. “Sometimes I’d be digging Steven Fretwell, others it would be Biffy Clyro. That contrast kind of filters over to the songs I write. I remember when the kids were tiny, I was so sleep deprived I’d be veering from one mood to the other, and that’s really what The Dawn Roar is about”. His songs, reflecting those moments, can be both fragile and cathartic.
Paul took some time out to work on his songwriting and learn how to produce. “I’ve had Cubase on my computer since I was a teenager, and I finally know how to use it! I’ve got a bunch of songs that are about done now, it’s about time I released them”.
Latest release The Rooftop is a pensive indie folk track inspired by early Bon Iver and reminiscent of Novo Amor and Hazlett. It juxtaposes romance and depression, staring out at the skyline and the stars from a city rooftop, contemplating life. It builds gently, landing you softly in the end.
